Drug abuse is considered as one of the grassroots of major social problems. Drugs was used originally to mean “medicine”. Drugs is now synonymous to narcotics that include cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, marijuana and the likes.
Drug Addiction is a brain disease as it changes the structure and functioning of the brain. You become an addict once you become dependent on drug and use it despite having knowledge of its harmful effects on health. It hinders a person from reaching his goals in life. It can lead to harming one’s body, causing problems in family and community as well as in workplace which may increase healthcare costs.
Drug testing is a potent prevention and deterrent method that is often part of a comprehensive drug-free workplace. Drug and alcohol screening improve workplace safety as the use of alcohol and recreational drugs can present a hazard in the workplace. In accordance with Section 36, Article III of Republic Act 9165, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 mandates the conduct of random drug testing to officers and employees of public and private offices.
The Metro Bangued Water District employees underwent the said test. The activity took place in HMC Clinic, Bangued Abra under the administration of Dr. Hubert Seares, MD on March 13-21, 2023.
Women, are the usual victims of drug abusers. Women are likely to agonize from the effects of drug abuse because they are perceived to be more vulnerable than men. This aspect of the burden brought about by drug abuse on women should receive ample attention. Driven by the aspiration to battle this social menace, MBWD GAD Committee conducted the drug testing activity on all of its employees. Management is optimistic that the said activity will bring about a healthier work environment free from worries over the ill effects of dangerous drugs, hence a safer and more efficient workforce.
